What Causes Yellow Teeth & How To Prevent It?

Posted on August 09 2016

When brushing twice a day and flossing doesn't help improve your yellow teeth, it's time to consider other options. Teeth become yellow due to stains – both deep and surface-level – as well as other causes that sometimes aren't under our control. Whether the discoloration is due to staining or other factors, several over-the-counter (OTC) products can improve tooth color, and your dentist can also offer preventative advice on how to whiten yellow teeth.

Brushing twice a day and flossing regularly doesn't overly help when it comes to yellowing teeth, so what can you do and why do teeth become yellow? Teeth yellowing is a natural process caused by stains present both deep and on the surface level of your teeth.

What Causes Yellow Teeth?

It's no secret that coffee, cigarettes and wine can significantly stain your teeth over time but there can be other factors, such as the thinness of your tooth enamel. Tooth enamel is the hard, white surface on your teeth which protects a pale, brown substance known as dentin. Ultimately the thicker your tooth enamel, the whiter your teeth will appear as a thinner tooth enamel will start to show the brown dentin located under your teeth. As we age, enamel naturally will wear, but acidic foods and drinks can speed up the process but eroding your tooth's enamel.

Other Causes

Acidic foods and drinks are not always the culprit when it comes to yellow teeth. Antibiotic use or excessive fluoride intake in young children has also been known to lead to yellow stained teeth later down the track, this is commonly referred to as fluorosis which creates blotchy tooth shade.

Preventing Yellow Teeth

To prevent yellow teeth we recommend avoiding smoking, coffee, wine and soda however if you do consume soda, it would be best to get in the habit of drinking them through a straw. Another tip is drinking milk or plain water after consuming something acidic as they both help to neutralise the acid's eroding effect on your tooth's enamel. Brushing a flossing is always a good habit, not only for your tooth's colour, but for overall dental hygiene.
